Chemistry is scored from three graded assessments: Unit 3 SACs (20%), Unit 4 SACs (30%), Written exam (50%). The exam sits on Tuesday 10 November at 9:00 am. This guide covers what each SAC asks for, what the exam looks like section by section, the mistakes the examination reports punish every year, a term-by-term plan from the first SAC to results day, and where Captivate Exam Hub fits in.
| Exam | Tuesday 10 November at 9:00 am |
| Length | 2 hours 30 minutes writing plus 15 minutes reading |
| Graded assessments | Unit 3 SACs 20% · Unit 4 SACs 30% · Written exam 50% |
| Study score | 0–50, ranked against everyone who sat Chemistry this year; mean 30, 38+ is roughly the top 15% |
| Scaling (indicative) | A raw 30 scaled to 34 and a raw 40 to 44 in the VTAC 2025 report. Scaling reflects the cohort’s strength, not difficulty. |
| Cohort | About 10,606 Unit 3 enrolments in 2024 |
| Assesses | Units 3 and 4 of the 2023–2027 study design: how chemical processes are designed to optimise efficiency, from fuels and electrochemistry to rates and equilibrium (Unit 3); how organic compounds are analysed, designed and used (Unit 4), with a student-designed investigation in Unit 4. |
VCE is next on Captivate Exam Hub. The features this guide points to (the daily loop, timed sits, the key-knowledge heatmap, SAC revision packs and the syllabus-only tutor) are live for Queensland students today and are what the VCE version carries. Check coverage for the launch.
Units 3 and 4 are taken as a sequence in one year and produce one study score. Exactly three graded assessments feed it: Unit 3 SACs, Unit 4 SACs, Written exam. School-assessed Coursework (SACs) are tasks your school sets from the options in the study design, done mainly in class time and marked by your teacher. The exam is set and marked by the VCAA.
School marks are statistically moderated against your school’s exam results, so a SAC mark is really a rank within your class, scaled to what the cohort does in November. That is why “only the exam matters” is a myth: school-based assessment is 50% of your Chemistry study score, and a strong exam lifts the whole school’s SAC marks with it.
Each graded assessment is standardised, weighted and totalled, then the total is ranked to give a study score out of 50. VTAC scales it, and the scaled score goes into your ATAR aggregate. The VCE ATAR guide walks through that step; the VCE ATAR calculator does the arithmetic.
Units 3 and 4 of the 2023–2027 study design: how chemical processes are designed to optimise efficiency, from fuels and electrochemistry to rates and equilibrium (Unit 3); how organic compounds are analysed, designed and used (Unit 4), with a student-designed investigation in Unit 4.
Your school chooses the task type for each outcome from the study design’s list, publishes a SAC calendar at the start of the year and must give notice of each date in advance. Expect 4 graded tasks across the two units; the table shows what each outcome asks for and the task types it can take.
| Outcome | What it assesses | Task types |
|---|---|---|
| Unit 3 · Outcome 1 | Energy and electrochemistry | A practical report, data analysis, or a structured test |
| Unit 3 · Outcome 2 | Rate and equilibrium | A practical report or an evaluation of a chemical process |
| Unit 4 · Outcome 1 | Organic chemistry and analysis | A structured test, a practical report, or an analysis of a case study |
| Unit 4 · Outcome 2 | Scientific investigation | A logbook and a scientific poster |
On Exam Hub, the school tasks feature is built for exactly this: add the SAC’s name, date, the areas your teacher named and whether it is open or closed book. A five-minute quick check finds the gaps, a revision pack per key knowledge point fills them, and each point wears one of five statuses from Not assessed to Transfer-ready.
Pace: 1.3 minutes per mark (150 minutes writing, about 120 marks), so a 10-mark question gets about 13 minutes. Decide the halfway checkpoint during reading time and write it on the front of the paper the moment writing starts.
The VCAA’s examination specifications and approved-materials list for every study are on the study’s page. Check them the week before, not on the way in.
Organise the year around your school’s SAC calendar rather than fixed dates. The pattern below is what the top-scoring cohort converges on: content first, spaced review always, exam-style practice from Term 1.
| When | What to do |
|---|---|
| Term 1 | Unit 3 begins; the first SAC usually lands in March. Start the error log and the spaced-review deck from week one. One timed exam-style question a week, even before you feel ready. |
| Term 2 | Unit 3 finishes and the remaining Unit 3 SACs fall here. The GAT is on Tuesday 16 June; see below for why it matters. |
| Term 3 | Unit 4 content and SACs. Begin collecting past exams. Trial exams at school are your first full dress rehearsal; mark them against the examination report, not just the key. |
| Term 3 holidays | Finish summary notes. From here, the work is retrieval and timed practice, not more notes. The exam-preparation plan below starts now. |
| Term 4 | Last SACs in early October, then the countdown to Tue 10 Nov. Results and the ATAR arrive at 7 am on Thursday 10 December. |
The General Achievement Test is compulsory for every student in a scored Unit 3–4 sequence. It does not count directly towards your Chemistry study score, but the VCAA uses it to check that school-based and external marking is fair, and it is the main input to a Derived Examination Score if illness or misadventure hits you in November. Treat it as insurance: one serious sitting in June can protect a year of work.
On Exam Hub, the planner turns the calendar into minutes per day: it schedules the most at-risk work first, projects spaced reviews so nothing fades, and keeps the final week for reviews and timed practice.
These are the patterns that recur in the VCAA examination reports year after year. Most are not knowledge gaps; they are command-term, structure or reading errors, and those are the cheapest to fix.
Misreading a command term is the single most common error the reports name. The command terms trainer drills what “describe”, “explain”, “analyse” and “evaluate” are each buying in a VCE paper.
Six weeks is enough if they are the right six weeks. The sequence is diagnose, repair, perform, maintain, keyed to the exam on Tuesday 10 November. Past papers under timed conditions are the core method; marking them against the examination reports is what makes them work, because the reports show how marks were awarded and what the cohort got wrong.
| Stage | Dates | For Chemistry |
|---|---|---|
| Diagnose | 19 Sep – 4 Oct | One timed past paper with the data book beside you exactly as in the exam, marked against the examination report. Rank areas by marks lost. |
| Repair | 5 – 18 Oct | Worst area first, untimed. Rewrite every calculation with a unit per line; rewrite every “explain” as cause, mechanism, consequence. Re-test closed-book after two days. |
| Perform | 19 Oct – Tue 10 Nov | From 19 October, one timed Section B half a week at 1.2 minutes per mark; a full paper on the weekend of 31 October–1 November. The exam is 9 am on 10 November, after most students’ maths papers. |
| Maintain | Exam week | Evening of 9 November: twenty minutes on the three weakest points and the error log. Pack the calculator. Nothing new. |
This is the part of the year Exam Hub was built for. The daily loop opens with recall, clears the reviews spaced repetition says are about to fade, then drills the key knowledge points costing you the most marks. Timed sits reproduce reading time and a hard stop and hold the marking until you finish. The heatmap shows every key knowledge point as a tile that steps up from open-book to closed-book to timed, and the readiness card gives a likely-score range rather than a flattering number.

| Feature | For Chemistry |
|---|---|
| Timed sits | A 120-mark paper with the data book, under reading time and a hard stop, with handwritten working photographed in. |
| Heatmap | One tile per key knowledge point across energy, electrochemistry, equilibrium, organic and analysis, stepped up to timed before it turns green. |
| Daily loop | Spaced recall of nomenclature rules, functional groups and the electrochemical conventions that are lost to time, not to difficulty. |
| Ask the tutor | Hint mode on a stuck equilibrium or stoichiometry part points at the next step, citing the key knowledge, without solving it. |
